Exit or Stay

Whether to leave is not an emotional question but one of value ordering: when a structure itself is uninhabitable, exit is a rational option standing beside endurance — not desertion.

A third kind of freedom: the right to exit

Isaiah Berlin separated negative from positive liberty, but both share an unstated premise — each concerns freedom obtainable *inside* a given structure.

  • Negative libertyHere, no one stops me
  • Positive libertyHere, I am actually able to
  • Right to exitI do not have to be here

The right to exit demands neither less interference nor more enabling conditions. It claims something else: that a subject may stop participating in the structure at all. It does not collide with reformism — the first two liberties are pursued on condition of staying inside, while the right to exit activates only once the structure is judged uninhabitable.

The value ordering this yields

  1. 1.Dignity over belonging
  2. 2.Possibility over safety
  3. 3.Exit over endurance

These are not moral demands on anyone else. They are criteria a subject uses when allocating a finite life.

Four options in front of a young person

  • RunExit the structure itself
  • GrindCompete harder inside it
  • Lie flatStop competing inside it
  • Get harvestedBe consumed by it

Grinding and lying flat both presuppose staying inside, and so remain bound by the structure's rules. Being harvested is not a choice but a default outcome. Only the first genuinely alters the relation between subject and structure.

Three signals

The value ordering answers whether. Signals answer when. These three come from the author's own list; any one of them counts as confirmation that the structure is uninhabitable:

  1. 1.Military action against Taiwan or another country
  2. 2.Reverse family planning — childbirth mandated, penalties for not complying
  3. 3.A full network cut — whitelist-only internet, no way over the wall

These are not universal criteria. They were written by one subject about one structure. Change the structure and the signals must be rewritten — but the practice of writing signals down first, then acting on them, transfers.

If you cannot leave yet

The sharpest objection: if exit requires capital, isn't this a manual for the propertied? The objection hides a mistake — it treats exit as an event, when exit is a process. **Every day spent accumulating exit capital is already inside the leaving.**

  1. 1.Cognitive disembedding first — requires no capital and is irreversible once done: you can no longer mistake structural harm for personal failure
  2. 2.Prioritise portable assets — skills, languages, health, remotely deliverable capability, credit and savings usable across borders
  3. 3.Refuse deeper binding — add no sunk costs. When capital accumulates slowly, this is the most effective substitute

How much exit capital you hold does determine how fast you disembed; that difference is real and not denied here. But speed is not eligibility. What deserves rejection is the narrative that sets exit as a one-time threshold.

FAQ

Isn't leaving just escapism?
Escapism flees into culture and fantasy, treating escape as a means. The right to exit treats exit as a legitimate terminal option under a specific judgment. The directions are opposite: the former leaves the subject's relation to the structure intact; the latter exists to change it.
How do I decide whether to leave?
First settle the value ordering — dignity over belonging, possibility over safety, exit over endurance. Then write down your own signals. The ordering answers whether; the signals answer when. Missing either half, the judgment degrades into mood.
Can ordinary people without money or connections leave?
Yes, but first correct a mistake: exit is a process, not an event. Cognitive disembedding costs no capital and is irreversible. Portable assets beat unportable ones. Refusing to deepen binding is the most effective substitute while capital accumulates slowly.
If everyone leaves, where does social progress come from?
The right to exit does not ask everyone to exit. It activates only once a structure is judged uninhabitable, and it does not deny the value of reform. Tying an individual's right to exit to society's collective fate is itself one of the ways a structure argues for its own continuation.
